TLA Ramstein at a glance
TLA Ramstein is what most families PCSing to Ramstein Air Base search for first, and the question behind it is practical: where can a family sleep from the night they land until permanent housing is ready, close enough to the base that in-processing, the housing office and school enrollment are a short drive rather than a commute? Prime TLA keeps 15 furnished homes in Ramstein-Miesenbach itself — a measured 6 minutes from the Ramstein Air Base gate and 9 minutes from Landstuhl Regional Medical Center — from 1-bedroom apartments of 60 m² to a 5-bedroom house with a private garden that sleeps 10.
Every one is a home, not a hotel room: a full kitchen, washer and dryer, Wi-Fi, parking, linens and TV, with separate bedrooms and a balcony or garden. Several of the Nollstraße apartments come with a private yard or a master suite, and most units carry a 360° virtual tour so you can walk the rooms before you commit. You do not pick a unit on this page — tell us your dates, household size, pets and where you will work, and your Relocation Manager matches you to the right one and confirms it in writing within 24 hours.
How TLA works when you stay in Ramstein-Miesenbach
Temporary Lodging Allowance is the daily allowance the DoD pays to offset lodging, meals and incidentals while you house-hunt after arriving. At Ramstein it is paid for up to 60 days for active duty, with the housing office typically approving 30 days first and reviewing your status in 10–15-day increments; extending toward 60 needs commander-level approval and proof that you are actively house-hunting. The rate is not a fixed figure — it depends on your rank, your dependents and the locality — so your nightly rate is calculated for your rank and dependent percentage to sit inside the DoD ceiling, and it is on your written confirmation before you pay anything.
Two documents decide whether Finance pays for an off-base Ramstein TLA home. The first is the Certificate of Non-Availability from on-base lodging: request it before or on arrival and keep the letter. The second is itemised receipts in the service member’s name showing the room charge, taxes and fees for every night. TLA is paid to you, not to the provider — no off-base provider can bill Finance directly — so plan a cash-flow buffer for the first cycle. Prime TLA issues a finance-ready itemised invoice every certification cycle, and your Relocation Manager assembles the claim packet (invoice, occupancy proof, CNA) so the claim goes through without back-and-forth.
Schools, pets and the first week
Families with school-age children usually want Ramstein-Miesenbach because the DoDEA Ramstein campus — Ramstein Elementary, Intermediate, Middle and High School — sits on Ramstein Air Base, minutes from the door. Enrollment can be started online at dodea.edu before you leave the United States; DoDEA asks for proof of residence at registration, and your Relocation Manager can provide a written confirmation of your TLA address. Bring each child’s immunisation record and previous transcript, and check the September 1 age cut-off for PreK, Kindergarten and first grade.
Pet-friendly Ramstein TLA homes exist, but they are the first to go — especially in the May–August peak — so declare species, count and weight when you book; pet count and family size are the first filters that disqualify inventory. On the German side, each pet needs an ISO-compliant 15-digit microchip implanted before the rabies vaccination, and the Ramstein Veterinary Treatment Facility offers limited boarding for active-duty pets that books out early. For the first week itself, a complimentary transition vehicle (subject to eligibility) means you drive yourself to in-processing on day one while your POV is still shipping.
Pricing, stay length and exit terms in Ramstein
Prime TLA publishes one minimum stay and nothing hidden beyond it: 14 nights off-peak, 30 nights during the May–August PCS peak. There is no hard maximum — extensions happen in the same unit, so a family whose permanent housing slips past the original date never moves twice, and a stay that outlasts TLA can continue as an OHA-compliant long-term rental in the same home. Rates are quoted per night in EUR with the German VAT structure shown, because that is the format Finance reads when it checks your nightly rate against the ceiling.
Orders change. Documented orders changes are penalty-free under our military-aware cancellation policy, and date changes are handled by your Relocation Manager rather than a call centre. Book 60–90 days before arrival if you can — pet-friendly and three-bedroom-plus homes fill first — but short-notice arrivals are matched from whatever is open on your dates, and the answer comes back within 24 hours either way. Nothing is paid at booking; your written rate, your invoice format and your exit terms are all on paper before you commit. Judge any TLA Ramstein provider on exactly those three things — we built our booking around them so that what you need to check is what we put on paper first.
